According to the 2011 report of World Health Organization, about 780 millionpeople do not have access to clean water, while around 3.4 million people dieeach year from a water-related disease. Even worse, 420 billion cubic meters of polluted water poured into natural water systems every year.(World Health Organization) Therefore, water pollution has become a serious problem in our society.
The academic definition of water pollution is the contamination of naturalwater bodies by chemical, physical, radioactive or pathogenic microbialsubstances. Gradual process of water quality brings a lot of illness and deaths. About 50million deaths per year of water pollution is mainly in Africa and Asia.(C. Michael Hogan 2010)At the same time, water pollution influences human, animals, and plants’ living environment. To reduce and control water pollution, environment researchers find out that industrial, agricultural, andhigh-densityurban areas’ sewage are the major sources of water pollution.
Firstly, industrial waste is main source of water pollution. In the industrialprocessing engineering, there are a lot of harmful raw materials from simple nutrients and organic matter to complex toxic substance of water resources.(Dr. P.K. Goel) The industrial wastes can be generated from a lot of different places like sugar factories, paper and pulp, textile, and distilleries. For example, sugar cane and beet are popular sugar; in the process nearly 85.5% of water will become wastewater. To produce sugar cane, about 500L wastewater will be produced during the process of sugar cane. For pulp and paper industry, that use vast of water. If we produce 1 ton of paper, we will consume 190 to 230m3 water. Also, this sewage contains a high BOD (it is widely used as an indication of the organic quality of water), organic matter, solids, fibrous matter and colour, which are very difficult to deal with. (Dr. P.K. Goel)
Secondly, agricultural sewage become a concerning problem for human beings. In the world, as there are more than 7 billion people, human and animals that consume agricultural products is a huge number in the world. Those agricultural products has consumed billions tons of water. As a result, the agrochemicals as an important ingredient of agricultural, becomes a significant pollution cause of water. Agricultural sewages are mainly from fertilizers, pesticides, organic manures, growth hormones, nutrient solutions and others.(Dr. P.K. Goel) These residual of agrochemicals in run-off water will cause severe pollution problems. For example, farm pesticides is for perishing aquatic and animals, excess nutrients from chemical fertilizers, animal manure, phosphate detergent can cause water pollution so that it will increase many kinds of pollutant to influence water quality. (Nathalie Fiset M.D)
Finally, domestic sewage can cause underground water pollution and seawater pollution. In the city, there is a large proportion of sewage coming from households. It is a common sense that people do not want to live near a dumpsite or landfill. As a result, wastewater and untreated sewage from domestic use are always poured into different bodies of water after some filtration process. It has become a potential risk when the sewage pipes get broken. In that situation, wastewater will contaminate the drinking water to cause some hygiene-related diseases. Besides, human beings are throwing millions of tons of plastics one year. Those plastics which be thrown into rivers, lakes and oceans cannot be biodegraded. What’s worse, some plastic like nylon can entangle fishes and other marine animals. Some seawater animals will eat small pieces of plastic by accident, which may cause their death. Due to the fact that plastic is non-biodegradable and cannot be digested, those plastic in contaminated water will continue to kill ocean animals. Nathalie Fiset M.D.)
In conclusion, according to the reasons above, industrial waste, agricultural sewage and urban sewage are the main causes of water pollution. According to these reasons, water pollution is a very serious problem, it can influences the living environment of human beings, plants and animals. In the world, there are many places suffering from a shortage of water; therefore, we should try to change or solve these sources of water pollution. Water is a natural resource, we do not produce water, and we just use it. Therefore, how to change water pollution in the earth is what everyone should start from our everyday lives.
